Deck of the Week: The Extended Perfect Storm

The deck I'm going to feature for this week is the first place deck of the recent Grand Prix Los Angeles and was piloted by Luis Scott-Vargas. The deck functions by using mana boosting spells such as Rite of Flame and Desperate Ritual, and card drawers like Ponder to setup a Mind's Desire with a high storm count and finish off with a Tendrils of Agony on the opponent. Deck of the Week: Mono Black Aggro

This week's deck feature is a Standard take of one of Magic's favorite decks: Mono Black. It was created by Jim Stafford and got 7th at State Championships 2008 in Wyoming. The list uses the powerful black creatures in Standard like Ashenmoor Gouger and Demigod of Revenge, and spot removals like Unmake and Nameless Inversion. It also uses Dusk Urchins, which served both as a beater and card drawer source.

What got me interested are the four copies of Fleshbag Marauder. I think its for Chameleon Colossus which is the bane of this deck. The decklist below:

Deck of the Week: U/W Merfolks

Hey guys. I was thinking of going tribal for this week's featured deck. I already mentioned tribal decks like Kithkins, Elves and Faeries on the previous weeks and this time I'll present to you the tribe where Ariel (the little mermaid) belongs. The people of the sea, the Merfolks!

The decklist is was piloted by Oliver Polak-Rottmann from the 2008 Magic The Gathering World Championships. What I like about his list are the four Wake Thrashers and three Reveillarks maindeck. These I guess is for straight to the point response for the deck's weaknesses, which is mass removal and lack of big threats. See the list below.

Deck of the Week: Boat Brew

My choice of the deck for this first week is the list named as "Boat Brew" and piloted by Aaron Nicastri that went undefeated in Day 1 at Worlds 2008.

The deck is basically a RW Midrange strategy that utilizes card advantage and uses powerful cards like Siege-Gang Commander, Reveillark, Ranger of Eos and Figure of Destiny. Not to mention the inclusion of the Red White planeswalker Ajani Vengeant. Here's the list:

Deck of the Week: Bant Aggro

Its deck of the week again folks and my choice of deck for this week's episode is from the latest Standard Trial Tournament at Magic-League.com (November 26) which the deck got 2nd place. The deck utilizes the power of the shard of Bant, with creatures such as Jhessian Infiltrator, Rhox War Monk and the mythic rare Rafiq of the Many.

The deck also uses control and permission spells such as Bant Charm, Cryptic Command and Negate, and the Planeswalker, which is also a resident of Bant, Elspeth.

Deck of the Week: Naya Aggro

My choice of deck for this week is from the 2008 States Championship in Vermont. I refer to it as the Standard version of the Zoo deck in Extended, with the ideal one-two-three punch of Figure of Destiny, Rip-clan Crasher and Woolly Thoctar. In addition are the burns, with Flame Javelins, Puncture Blasts, Naya Charms and Magma Sprays taking the spot.

Deck of the Week: Razer Ramon

It's deck of the week Monday once again. Its an unexpected change of schedule. Hehe.. Anyways, my choice of deck to feature this week is the one created by my friend and co-player John Rey Sequio. Its a Naya shard based three-color deck featuring mana producing Birds of Paradise and Bloom Tender to accelerate into an early Wooly Thoctar or Chameleon Colossus beats or the deck's superstar, the walking Armageddon Realm Razer. Not to forget the additional support of the two planeswalkers, Garruk and Ajani Vengeant.

Deck of the Week: Vengeant Weenie

My choice of deck for this week is the one I'm planning to build by the end of this year. This deck combines the fast and aggressive beats of White weenie with the hard hitting burn spells of Red. It made its first top 16 appearance on StarCityGames.com $5,000 Standard Open Tournament last October. The deck focused on cheap and Exalted creatures such as Akrasan Squire and Sigiled Paladin to push early and large chunks of damage. It is also beautifully combined with Elspeth, giving the exalted attacker a +3/+3 pump and evasion.

Of course, the deck wouldn't be called by that name if not for its superstar Planeswalker, Ajani Vengeant. Its first two abilities of tapping down a large threat or Helixing a potential blocker are the key in getting the opponent to low life and within shooting range of the deck's burn spells. Flame Javelin? Incinerate? Puncture Blast? you name it. Here's the latest decklist that got 6th place from Alabama State Champs and was piloted by Brett Anderson.

Deck of the Week: Nauseam Assault

Here's a pretty peculiar but interesting deck that I'll feature as the deck for the week. The list is from the latest Standard Trial Tournament at Magic-League.com and was piloted by el_cuervito.

In my understanding of the deck, its main objective is to get Seismic Assault online as early as turn 3 and play Ad Nauseam at turn four, getting most of the lands in the deck and shoot the opponent to death. This can be made through the help of the cards Devoted Druid, Swans of Bryn Argoll and Idyllic Tutor. The sideboard is probably for permissions decks (Vexing Shushers and Guttural Responses) and aggro (Firespouts and Angelsong) decks. Here is the list below:

Deck of the Week: Affinity

Hey y’all, Happy Halloween! For our deck for this week, we’ll take a look at the top Extended format decks at the current Pro Tour Berlin. The new Extended is said to be more on the aggressive side.

Favorite aggro decks got some updates with the release of Shards of Alara. One of them that got the most benefits from Shards is Affinity, with the addition of artifact lord, Master of Etherium and Ethersworn Canonist which limits the spells of non-artifact decks. Also additions to the Affinity deck are the cards Salvage Titan, a threat that can get in play early or can be a late game bomb, and Soul’s Fire, which when combined with Cranial Plating is a great finisher dealing enormous Fling like damage.

Deck of the Week: Black Green Rock

Hey guys, I just got time to update my blog today. I’m been busy with my tasks on the new client and studying that Forex site took a lot of my time. Ok for this week’s deck, I’ll present the latest build of one of my favorite color combinations which is Black-Green and is popularly known as the Rock deck. This list is the 2nd placer from Magic-League’s latest Masters Tournament.

I liked it because it has the best Standard card components each color would offer. For the Green cards, it has Chameleon Colossi, Kitchen Finks, and vanquisher. The Black cards, obviously served as removals, got Thoughtseize, Profane Command and Nameless Inversions. What I also like is the built-in Stillmoon Cavaliers, a dreaded bomb against the Kithkins and Bitterblossom for a steady supply of beaters.

Top Standard Decks this Week

Tomorrow's gonna be our first Standard post rotation tournament here in Iloilo. The new set Shards of Alara will be joining in to replace Times Spiral block and Coldsnap.

So far, the decks I've observed that has been winning the tournaments around the net are those same Tier 1 decks in Lorwyn block. I guess people are still brainstorming on what stable deck to construct with the shards, or are they just having problems with the three colors in their decks. Hehe...

Add-ons???

Shards are acting like add-ons (plugins?) to the Lorwyn block decks. For instance, I've noticed in the Kithkin decks the addition of Knight of the White Orchid in the sideboard. Maybe its for control decks. Another one is Agony Warp as a replacement for Nameless Inversion and Infest for Damnation in the Faes. Some are also using Relic of Progenitus for graveyard hate and maybe as a substitute for Faerie Macabre.

That's my observation so far but I know someone will come up with an innovation or a deck that can match or even dominate the current metagame.

Regarding tomorrow's tournament, I'm expecting Lorwyn block with 10th ed decks as Shards of Alara hasn't arrived yet in our local store. A fellow mtg player told me its gonna be arriving tomorrow. Oh well, I guess no one would bother to buy packs just to include new cards in their decks. Our tournament place is far from the local store that's why. Hehe...

For the deck I'll pilot, I'm choosing between my current RDW or the Kithkins. The little white men are dominating online tournaments this week but based on our local meta, I think RDW is more preferable although its a bad matchup against the Kithkins. Hmmm...which is which...

Deck of the Week: Demigod Stompy

For this week's deck feature, we'll be going back to the previous expansions in the Extended format. The deck I'll present to you is the one named "Demigod Stompy" that got first place in the recent Post-Rotation Extended MWS Trial tournament at Magic-League.com. The deck's main goal is pretty simple: get a Demigod of Revenge or a Deus of Calamity at turn one and bash your opponents to death. You can do this with a lot of mana accelerators (chrome mox, simian spirit guide) and mana generating spells such as Rite of Flame, Seething Song and Desperate Ritual. Another possible win condition would be an early Goblin beats via Empty the Warrens. I like this deck because you can do alot of mana boost combination on your first three turns depending on the matchup and of course, this being a mono red deck. Deck of the Week: Quillspike Combo

Reveillark-Body Double and Seismic Swans isn't the only existing combo in the current Standard. Shadowmoor and Eventide brought us two simple combo pieces, Devoted Druid and Quillspike, which can go off by turn four if done without interruption or combined with cards like Rite of Consumption and Fling. Here's how the combo works:

1. Tap the Devoted Druid to add G to your mana pool.
2. Put a -1/-1 on it to untap.
3. Use that -1/-1 counter to give Quillspike a +3/+3 boost.
4. Repeat steps 1 to 3.

The result? an infinite power/toughness Beast ready to pound your opponent or ready to be sacrificed to Rite of Consumption. Here is a decklist that made top 4 on the MWS Trial tournament at Magic-league.com.

Deck of the Week: Mono White Control

Hey peeps! Welcome to another episode of Deck of the Week. I wasn't able to post last week because I just recovered from sickness, plus the workload that I've left at the office got me very busy.

Anyways, the deck I'll feature for this week is quiet different from the current top decks in Lorwyn Block. The access to filter lands makes you create a deck of any color that you want, but this build chose to go mono utilizing basic Plains only and filled with powerful white and hybrid to white spells such as Figure of Destiny, Oversoul of Dusk, Hallowed Burial, Unmake and Kitchen Finks.

Deck of the Week: Mono-Red Demigod

My deck of the week choice for this week is the build piloted by the recently crowned 2008 US Nationals Champion, Micheal Jacob. I've featured the deck a few weeks ago and this one is an update of the Japs list made by Shuhei Nakamura and Tomoharu Saito. The changes are the upgrade of Mogg Fanatic to Eventide's best card, Figure of Destiny and basic Mountains to Snow-covered Mountains. It is because of Skred as a replacement for Shock.

Deck of the Week: Mono White Kithkins

Hey peeps! The recent success of the Kithkin decks in the Magic League Lorwyn Block Trial tournaments made me consider them as my feature deck for this week. The recent upgrade of the deck is the inclusion of Eventide's Figure of Destiny and Unmake, and changes in the card components like the addition of Oversoul of Dusk in exchange for Cloudgoat Ranger and Burrenton Forge-Tender placed as part of the maindeck. The sideboard also had some upgrade with the addition of cards like Fire at Will and Stillmoon Cavalier.

The recent build that went undefeated in the Magic League Trial tournament is the one piloted by ovmlcabrera of Argentina. Below is the decklist.
