Deck of the Week: Mono Black Aggro

This week's deck feature is a Standard take of one of Magic's favorite decks: Mono Black. It was created by Jim Stafford and got 7th at State Championships 2008 in Wyoming. The list uses the powerful black creatures in Standard like Ashenmoor Gouger and Demigod of Revenge, and spot removals like Unmake and Nameless Inversion. It also uses Dusk Urchins, which served both as a beater and card drawer source.

What got me interested are the four copies of Fleshbag Marauder. I think its for Chameleon Colossus which is the bane of this deck. The decklist below:
Maindeck
4 Ashenmoor Gouger
4 Demigod of Revenge
4 Dusk Urchins
4 Fleshbag Marauder
4 Viscera Dragger

2 Infest
2 Loxodon Warhammer
4 Nameless Inversion
2 Profane Command
4 Thoughtseize
3 Unmake

23 Swamp

Sideboard
4 Bottle Gnomes
2 Corrupt
2 Infest
4 Rain of Tears
2 Raven's Crime
1 Unmake

For the other decks featured on the previous weeks, see it here.

I just googled myself and found this article. This was a while back but just in case I'll comment on it. The Fleshbag Marauders were partly for the Chameleon Colossus which destroys this deck very fast if not dealt with. It was pretty common as a main and side in many decks at the time. The other part was that the synergy and card advantage of it with Profane Command and the unearthed VDraggers was really good. I did so well in this tourney because so many people were playing 5 color control which this deck wrecks. The recursion and card advantage from the Demigod, Dragger, Urchins, and Profane were too much for them to handle. I even beat a 5cc that played 3rd turn Story Circle (black).
